I have been dealing with some pretty severe anxiety since my son was born, so my doctor suggested i give Lexapro a shot. I did some research and made sure to ask a lot of questions but I am just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with it. The last thing i want to do is take something that will harm my baby, when the things making me anxious are all about what could harm my baby. Do the benefits actually outweigh the risks? I was on lexapro prior to pregnancy. I have such bad anxiety I was getting physical symptoms heart palpitations and feeling like I couldn't breath. While my body was adjusting I did have some of the side effects like clenching my jaw and feeling dizzy from time to time so be aware of that possibility while caring for your LO. That only lasted about a week.

Lately I have been having such a hard time with overwhelming feelings of depression, anxiety and guilt about everything. Prior to pr glance I was on 20mg of Lexapro and found it so helpful and lifesaving. After birth, my obgyn prescribed the Zoloft.

Limited information indicates that maternal doses of escitalopram up to 20 mg daily produce low levels in milk and would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants, especially if the infant is older than 2 months. One case of necrotizing enterocolitis was reported in an breastfed newborn whose mother was taking escitalopram during pregnancy and lactation, but causality was not established. A seizure-like event occurred in an infant who was also exposed to bupropion in milk.

New mothers who struggle with depression might feel hesitant to keep taking antidepressant medication while breastfeeding. But new research hints that there are benefits to staying on antidepressants, despite the reported short-term risks of drug exposure in babies. An analysis from the Robinson Research Institute at the University of Adelaide, Australia suggests that rather than posing a risk to newborns, antidepressants could actually make it more likely that mothers will nurse their babies for the six-month period recommended by pediatricians.

Many of my patients who are diagnosed with postpartum depression want to continue breastfeeding. How safe are the newer antidepressant medications during breastfeeding?
