Medications are often used to treat the behavioral problems, such as aggression, self-harming behavior, and severe tantrums, that keep someone with autism from functioning more effectively at home or school. The medications used are those that have been developed to treat similar symptoms in other disorders. However, the doctor prescribes the medications anyway if he or she feels they are appropriate for the child.

I've not been officially diagnosed with being on the Autism Spectrum, because when I was told I probably had Asperger's Syndrome there was no where convenient for adults to be diagnosed and there was also no support for the North of Scotland awareness of support is now slowly changing thankfully. When I was younger I struggled with speech therapy, had countless sessions on physiotherapy for aching joints and my "funny walk", disruptive in class, had my hearing tested several times, and didn't cope well with social situations. Because of the issues of feeling trapped in classrooms with people, the social situations of school, and being bored in school ended up with me seeing a councillor again.

Most of the interventions designed to help people on the autism spectrum deal with anxiety are the same as those designed to help anyone deal with anxiety. For example, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence NICE recommends that anyone treating a specific type of anxiety in people on the autism spectrum such as generalised anxiety disorder should follow existing advice for treating that type of anxiety in other people.
