After lexapro rage stopping

Anger is a normal human emotion. We use discussion and logic to make anger serve us in productive ways. SSRI withdrawal turns this normal process on its head. In withdrawal, anger forms independently in the mind. Instead of rising in response to an external event, withdrawal causes anger without context. Normally, there is a range of emotion to anger. We moderate ourselves to match the event. Instead of fighting an insulting person, we debate or avoid them. Extreme responses are withheld until there is a threat of physical harm. Withdrawal blurs the line between intellectual and physical anger and eliminates the scale that we usually apply to situations to gauge our responses.

It's been over a week but felt like even longer. As well as feeling sick and overally emotional i have been having 'rage attacks'. I get episodes of rage and it could be over nothing but all i can feel is intense anger and nothing else. I no that if i wasn't withdrawing from the medication i wouldn't feel this way but it makes me even more angry to think that during the rage. I feel so angry i want to smash everything and even smash or break my arms and legs, anger will suddenly just consume me and it lasts for different lengths of time. It's so controlling that when i feel that angry i have also had suicidal thoughts and think i should just go kill myself which is very concerning, and it feels as if im incapable of any other emotion during one of the episodes. I feel like i become totally disconnected from everything, and i have never been an angry person. I also became very sick for approx. I have also become covered in a rash, since stopping lexapro. Please help what should i do?

Psychiatrists are being forced to face the evidence that SSRI withdrawal symptoms are indeed long lasting and damaging to physical and mental health. The descriptions written by patients who stopped taking these drugs tell the true story. SSRIs are a class of compounds typically used as antidepressants in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, and some personality disorders. A team of professionals set out to study websites where former SSRI patients had posted their personal withdrawal stories. The team then tabulated the types of withdrawal effects reported by those living through them. The researchers found that patients indeed had significant withdrawal symptoms while trying to quit the SSRI and significant post withdrawal problems long after they had stopped taking the drug. The authors discovered two phases of SSRI withdrawal. The second phase began 6 weeks after the drug was discontinued. These post withdrawal disorders rarely disappeared on their own.

Can going off your medication cause antidepressant withdrawal symptoms antidepressant discontinuation syndrome? As many of us know, these medications can be a godsend when depression has robbed life of its joy and made it hard to muster the energy and concentration to complete everyday tasks. But as you begin to feel better and want to move on, how long should you keep taking the pills? If you're doing well on antidepressants and not complaining of too many side effects, many physicians will renew the prescription indefinitely — figuring that it offers a hedge against a relapse of depression. But side effects that you may have been willing to put up with initially — sexual side effects decreased desire and difficulty having an orgasm , headache , insomnia, drowsiness, vivid dreaming, or just not feeling like yourself — can become less acceptable over time, especially if you think you no longer need the pills. The decision to go off antidepressants should be considered thoughtfully and made with the support of your physician or therapist to make sure you're not stopping prematurely, risking a recurrence of depression. Once you decide to quit, you and your physician should take steps to minimize or avoid the discontinuation symptoms that can occur if such medications are withdrawn too quickly. Antidepressants work by altering the levels of neurotransmitters — chemical messengers that attach to receptors on neurons nerve cells throughout the body and influence their activity. Neurons eventually adapt to the current level of neurotransmitters, and symptoms that range from mild to distressing may arise if the level changes too much too fast — for example, because you've suddenly stopped taking your antidepressant. They're generally not medically dangerous but may be uncomfortable.

When I was 17, I was prescribed Prozac — a serotonin reuptake inhibitor SSRI — for my anxiety with the hope that it would aid in my eating disorder recovery. But every time my dose was decreased which is done gradually to minimize side effects , I got extremely irritable. I survived a few days without my meds and decided to just keep riding that wave.

I was 17 when a psychiatrist first prescribed me Prozac for anxiety. I'd been struggling with an eating disorder for two years and wasn't making much progress. After seven more months without any improvement, I ended up at a residential center for eating disorder treatment, where another psychiatrist upped my dosage.

These and millions of other patients find themselves caught in the web of psychiatric sorcery — a spell cast, hexed, potentially for life. They are told that they have chemical imbalances.
