Xanax isnt a pain medication but if stress aggravates your back pain then Xanax might help by relieving the stress. It may also help you sleep better. The thing with chronic Xanax use is that the body gets tolerant to the effects quickly and it is a bugger to get off this medication once your body becomes dependent on it.
